OS X Lion Terminal Colours

Just a small reminder to myself courtesy of Rowan Watson.

LSCOLORS in ~/.bash_profile

The first thing you need to do is edit ~/.bash_profile and put this code in to make folders color:

export CLICOLOR=1

export LSCOLORS=ExFxCxDxBxegedabagacad

LSCOLORS Options

LSCOLORS has the ability to use 11 different indicators to set background and foreground colors:

directory
symbolic link
socket
pipe
executable
block special
character special
executable with setuid bit set
executable with setgid bit set
directory writable to others, with sticky bit
directory writable to others, without sticky bit

Possible letter values to associate with the above numbers. Each indicator expects a pair of letters covering both foreground and background:

a black
b red
c green
d brown
e blue
f magenta
c cyan
h light grey
A block black, usually shows up as dark grey
B bold red
C bold green
D bold brown, usually shows up as yellow
E bold blue
F bold magenta
G bold cyan
H bold light grey; looks like bright white
x default foreground or background

Ex means bold blue foreground and default background for directories.

Lion Support

Lion provides support to override the color values associated with the above letters. The default colors always seem conflict with any terminal theme choice. Overriding should allow one to finally get that terminal perfect terminal theme and associated ANSI colours. Easily configured from the terminal.app preferences dialog.

Registration

Started off with heading down to the Moscone centre for registration. Quite a lot of people and long queues. Then decided to scout out all the buildings so I know where I'm going when moving to the next talk. Eye balled the Mason street tent which will be hosting the Java Posse live podcast on Tuesday.

I then did a little more wondering. This time explored more of the residential areas. Even saw a cable car! The hills in this place are crazy. Way too many gradient changes. Wasn't long before I was ready for bed. Early night for the JDK7 talk tomorrow morning.

San Francisco: First impressions

Despite a 26 hour trip including a 6 hour delay at LAX, I finally landed in San Francisco. Fortunately, I had Saturday to myself before things get under way and decided to have a little wonder.

As expected there was quite a lot to take in. Tall buildings, marketing, trams, piers, hills, fog, and of course the Golden Gate Bridge. I found myself trying to live the moment and actually didn't take too many photos. There's so much I could comment on. Americans definitely have a different approach to things. What is with all the commercials?

I was also a little shocked to the amount of poverty I saw. I know all inner cities have their problems but, it really did feel like it was everywhere. The stereotype of living rough with a shopping cart is quite prominent. Living in London one would of thought I'd be use to it?

Anyways, I better get up. Registration opens today. I'm already excited! I promise more photos soon.
